#64 Chad Colby
Hometown and State: Morton, Illinois
Marital status, wife, children etc: Married, Wife Ginger,
step-daughter Amber (15)
Occupation: Operation Manager
Racing Class: Former Pro, now running Sport 85
When/How did you start racing? Began Racing in 1990, at the age of 19. Started grass dragging and moved on to ice dragging and then in the late
90’s, began great stint as Snow-Cross racer. This developed into a full team operation which, most importantly, included a sponsorship from Polaris.
During that time, I peaked snow cross racing as a semi-pro. Then spent couple years helping out a young semi-pro snow cross racer, which was a
great experience because with some guidance he turned pro and finished his career. Most recently, I have moved to my real passion, which is Cross-
Country racing, this coming season will be my 6th with the USCC.
What's your favorite track/ race: Red Lake I-500, just simply because of its history and the amazing test of man and machine.
What's your favorite thing about cross country racing? The challenge of the various conditions/terrain/weather/God only knows that change every
mile. The other racers and teams in this series are just great people which make it very enjoyable as well.
Most Memorable Race: Meeting my now close friend John Leemann back in 1999 on a Snow-Cross track in Pennsylvania. After 5 laps, he still
couldn't pass me. We still laugh about it to this day. But it’s hard to compare to seeing the checkered flag in the four I-500’s that I have completed
2004, 2005, 2006, & 2007.... in 08 I DNF with gear case failure.
Successes/Career highlights: Most recent success would be finishing in top in 30+ class in 08 and my first USCC Class Championship in the Sport
85 Class in the 2007 season. In 2006 finshing 4th overall in Pro-Stock points championship in 06' season, also received 2006 Sportsman of the
Year Award. Other career achievements would be the 2000-2001 season when I finished 17th overall in the WSA Semi-Pro Fan Class. In 2004, I was
6th in overall points standing in the USCC Pro-Open Class and in 2005, my overall point standing was 7th in the Pro-Open Class.
Pit Crew Names and Roles: I have many people to thank, Aaron Baer (your help with my race effort of the last few yrs has been huge, THANKS), Scott
Grimmer, Brian Leone, & Chad Unzicker. Thanks to my wife who is not the biggest fan of cold weather, always does her best to support my racing.
Thanks, I love you...
Your racing number, why??: In 2004/2005 season, I changed my number to honor Aaron Creamer, an AMA Pro Flat Track racer who lost his life doing
what he loved in August of 2004, God speed Aaron! I met Aaron through a mutual friend and witnessed his amazing racing abilities first hand, but
most importantly, he was a tremendous man who made a lasting impression on everyone he met. After talking to his friends, it was clear to me that in
honor of him, I will always run the number 64 on my sled.
Advice for future racers: Go talk to the guys that have been doing it for years and ask as many questions as you can. Remember, if they have been
racing for a long time, there is probably a reason. Always race smart and have fun & ride within your abilities!
Favorite racer or athlete, any sport(s): I admire a lot of Nascar drivers because of their high level of commitment.
What was your first sled? My 1st Arctic Cat….A Kitty Cat. Dad even put wheels on it for me in the summer, thanks Dad!
What are your hobbies away from snowmobiling? Flying, farming & Nascar
Pre race rituals: Love hearing the National Anthem at the race. It has always reminded me of my late Mother. Of course at times, a quick prayer
doesn’t hurt either.
Your biggest racing pet peeve: Drivers with very poor attitudes on and off the race track.
Your worst racing memory: Following right behind Jeff Tweed at the WSA National Race in Chicago, where Jeff was injured seriously.
Comments/ Anything special: As much as I enjoy racing, I also enjoy helping other who are getting started in race. Last yr (08) after the DNF @ I-500 I
did some radio work with Don and I really enjoyed it, so you most likely will be hearing me during some USCC events this yr.
What do you like to do for fun when you’re not racing? Spend time with my family, watching Nascar races on TV and at the track, and helping out on
my Dad’s farm.
What other sports do you like? Basketball & golf
How do you train? It seems as the older I get, this is much more important. I prefer running and eating healthy.
Sponsors (last season 2006): Factory Arctic Cat, USI, PowerMadd, ArcticFX, Grip-N-Rip, HMK, The
Outdoor Shop, J & J Powder Coating, Scott
What are your personal goals for this coming season? For 08/09 my goals are simple, win races and to do what I can to help promote my
sponsors and the USCC.
